Extension office hosted raised bed gardening seminar

Area gardening enthusiasts got a chance to learn a new way of growing their favorite fruits, vegetables and flowers.

The class was hosted by the University of Missouri Extension and was well attended by members of the Audrain County Master Growers inside the Audrain County Courthouse on Tuesday, July 18. The class was taught by Pike County Extension agent and horticulture specialist Justin Keay. Keay is a vegetable farmer and sold vegetables at a market in St. Louis County for eight years. Keay also produces the Produce Growers Video newsletter for the Extension.

The class started with the topic of why grow in containers? Keay pointed out it’s a good way for people with disabilities and seniors with mobility issues because containers can be set up in a way that’s convenient.

Container gardening is also a good way to help protect plants from the weather and if there’s no other options or limited space.

“Whether you have crummy soil or no soil containers can be an option,” Keay said.

The rest of the class focused on things that can be grown in containers, processes and tips for success.

The Extension is hosting a master gardener’s class that will begin on Aug. 13 and will be online so that learners can work at their own pace. For more information visit the extension website. To sign up for Keay’s video newsletter visit www.muext.us/PGV.
