Eye on the election... Audrain County Clerk offers insights into new photo I.D. law

With just under two weeks to go until the November 8th General Election voters should be aware of some changes at the polls.

Missouri's new voter law will require voters to present a non-expired Missouri driver's license, military ID, or US passport.

If they can not, they will still be allowed to vote, however will be issued a provisional ballot. This ballot does not go through the voting machine and does take some time to county as the voters identification must still be verified.

If someone does not possess a drivers license they can go to the DMV and get a photo ID to vote for no charge. To obtain a nondriver license from the Missouri Department of Revenue, you will need to provide proof of name, date of birth, place of birth, social security number and proof of Missouri residential address. No excuse absentee voting is already underway in Audrain County, that starts two weeks prior to the General Election.

Another change this year is if a voter is a registered voted in Missouri and moves to a different county within Missouri they can go to the county clerk’s office in the county they moved to and change their address. This can be done before election and the voter will be informed of the polling location they will vote at on election day.  If they come into the county clerk’s office on election day to change their address they will be eligible to vote but in the clerk’s office only.

Audrain County Clerk Lisa Smith says "The new law will not have much impact on voters in Audrain County. Most residents who vote in Audrain County already have valid ID's. Voting is safe in Audrain County with numerous checks and balances in place that ensures elections are fair and fraud free.
