Gary was born September 29, 1945, in Mexico, Mo. He was the son of Herbert F. Jackson Sr. and Beatrice (Lue) Jackson.

Gary is a veteran of the U.S. Navy. He worked at Kaiser/National Refractories in Mexico, and briefly at Harbison Walker in Vandalia. He retired from that industry and thought he would spread his knowledge at the Fulton State Hospital assisting patients as needed. He attended Moller Barber College in Kansas City. His true calling was barbering at Art’s Beauty Salon. During those years he groomed many people both young and old. As you sat in his chair for a haircut you were going to hear that firm voice of mentoring of how to better yourself and giving his advice on all subjects whether requested or not. He told a story to all.

He was a member and Deacon at Progressive Baptist Church in Columbia. He loved jogging, gathering with family, cutting hair and watching sports. He was a “true” Mizzou Tiger fan.

In April of 1972, he married Sarah A. Cox who survives. In addition to his wife, survivors include their daughter and her family, Yolanda (Jackson) Jordan (Darren), and their two sons, Gary’s grandsons, Darren Kohl Jordan and Dryson Kade Jordan all of Columbia; Gary’s daughter, Shareaka Jefferson and grandchildren, Shontoyia Jefferson, Kevin Aaron, Mercedes Houston, and Tyrek Jefferson; and great grandchildren, E’liah Olive, Taliyah Weston, Kay’vion Aaron, Ma’riajh Houston, My’leigha Berry and Malaysia Houston all of Columbia; four brothers: Arthur Jackson , Mexico, Larry Jackson, Mexico, Lowell (Jaye) Jackson, Mexico, and Ivan (Eula) Jackson Cordova, Tenn.; seven sisters, Elaine (Larry) Bell, Mexico, Jaclyn (Richard) White, Mexico, Carol (Raymond) Williams, Peoria, Ill, Alice Jackson, Mexico, Bobbette Jackson, Mexico, Maria Jackson, Columbia, and Rita Jackson, Mexico; two brothers-in-law, Billy Cox, Columbia and Thomas Cox (Julie), Lees Summit; sister-in-law, Linda Stewart (William), Chicago, Ill; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
