The community has been generous in collecting items to donate to the American Cancer Society Hope Lodge in memory of Joe Offutt and other cancer patients that have benefited from free lodging while receiving cancer treatment away from home.
For more than 25 years, the Hope Lodge has been a free home away from home for thousands of cancer patients and caregivers who needed to travel to St. Louis for treatments.
In spring and summer 2020, major renovations have been made to Hope Lodge, as 42 new guest suites and larger community kitchens have been added, among other improvements.
Due to COVID-19 and the renovations, Hope Lodge will be welcoming guests back in early 2021. Since 2020 looks a little different, the community is being asked that donations be made for specific wish list items. Suggested donation amounts are $5 value, disposable plates or napkins, aluminum foil and freezer bags; $10 value, disinfectant wipes, paper towels and trash bags; $15 value, broom or mop, dishwashing detergent tabs; $20-$25 value, laundry detergent tabs, toilet paper. A $100 donation provides laundry detergent, coffee, creamer or kitchen supplies for one month.
Collection dates are Monday, Oct. 19 through Monday, Nov. 23 at Sydenstricker Implement Company, 4803 S. Clark St.; and from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24 at Moser’s, 1101 W. Monroe St..
