Jesse says goodbye after 45 years at City Hall

Posted

Longtime Mexico city employee Dolly Jesse never needed to brush up on her resume.

The mother of two and grandmother of five retired from Mexico City Hall last Thursday, July 27, after spending more than 45 years helping city residents with their utility bills. Jesse started with the city in 1978 and never had another job.

“I was 17 years old, a COE student and I made $2.10 an hour,” Jesse told the Ledger about her first year with the city.

The city held a reception for Jesse inside the city council chambers with a packed crowd. Deputy City Manager Roger Haynes spoke about Jesse and said there are not enough kind words for his colleague.

“I get so many unsolicited comments from the public about Dolly Jesse and about how kind and pleasant and lovely she is,” Haynes said. “There’s no doubt God had a special secret recipe when you were developed. You’re one in a million people. I can tell you the people here that work with you feel the same way.”

Someone from the crowd shouted that she will be missed every day. Jesse laughed and said, “I’m still retiring,” which drew huge laughter from the crowd. Jesse was presented with a gift from the city and a card from the city staff.

Jesse has essentially performed the same task for 45 years which is helping people with their utility bills. One city patron noticed the party and had to come in and hug Jesse.

“I’ve been here that long because I love my job but I finally got old enough it’s time to retire,” Jesse said. I’ll probably miss my job because I’ve done it my whole life. It’ll probably be strange not to come and do the utility billing as I’ve done for all of these years. I’ll miss all the people.

Jesse said she’s made a lot of friends at City Hall over her 45 years.

“I’ve seen a lot of people come and go and a few of them have stayed as long as me,” Jesse said. “Rita Jackson was one of my first friends and I consider her a very close friend. We’ve been friends for 40 years.”

Jesse said she plans on spending a lot more time with her children and grandchildren. Mr. Jesse might also get some extra company.

“I’m planning on spending a lot of time with them and if I want I can hang out with my husband because he’s a farmer,” Jesse said while laughing.
