The City of Mexico is looking at several options to clear up a popular trout fishing spot at Kiwanis Lake Park.
Mexico Parks and Recs Director Chad Shoemaker, recently reported to the Mexico City Council about Kiwanis Lake.
“It has a severe phosphorus nutrient issue. Chemistry will not take care of this, there is simply too much phosphorus in the lake,” said Shoemaker.
The sediment depth at the bottom of the lake is 1 to 3.5 feet. One option is to wet dredge down to remove sediment. Another option is to dry down, however that could create a horrific odor. The other challenge being looked at is how to pay for the clean out at the lake. Mr. Shoemaker estimates an over $600,000 price tag for the cleanout.
The City Council is expected to take a closer look at the funding for the project during their budget planning session which happens later this year.
