Ladybirds shut out host South Callaway in second half to win 58-16

The North Callaway girls had to wait a couple days, but their defense was still sharp.

In fact, head coach Andrew Klein called the Ladybirds' first-round game of the South Callaway tournament  their "best defensive game of the year," following two days of cancellations due to winter weather. North Callaway defeated host South Callaway 58-16 after shutting out the Lady Bulldogs (3-10) in the second half.

North Callaway (9-4) led 25-16 at halftime but but then clamped down better than its 63-42 victory at South Callaway earlier this season. The Ladybirds allowed one player, Reagan Arrowood, to score 27 points then, but that was far from the result this time.

Leading scorers Natalie Shryock and Riley Blevins only needed to combine for 13 points as the Ladybirds received contributions all around, including 17 points, five rebounds and three steals from Lakyn Hartley. Lauren Riecke followed with a career-high 10 points, and Blevins had seven points but also seven assists and six rebounds to lead the team in both categories.

North Callaway faces No. 2 seed Hermann (8-4) in the tournament semifinals at 4:30 p.m. today in the middle school.

Thunderbirds limited without Craighead, lose 59-37 to Eldon

Isiah Craighead makes a difference for the North Callaway boys.

They knew that already, but that was reinforced on Wednesday in the South Callaway tournament first round that was delayed two days due to winter weather. With their second-leading scorer and leading rebounder out this week with injury, the Thunderbirds lost 59-37 to Eldon.

Head coach Matt Miller said Class 4 Eldon (7-3) has recorded some quality victories this season while North Callaway (3-9) had too many turnovers and were missing Craighead's presence on the floor.

Hunter Hees led Eldon with 25 points and help the Mustangs take a 32-16 halftime lead.

Sam Pezold led North Callaway with 18 points and seven rebounds, and Clayton Moore had a season-high eight rebounds.

The Thunderbirds face New Bloomfield (4-8) in the consolation bracket at 7:30 p.m. today at the middle school. They lost to New Bloomfield 56-48 earlier last week.
