Mexico tennis didn’t have its full ranks on Tuesday, but victory proved to be within reach.

The Bulldogs defeated North Central Missouri Conference foe Marshall 5-4 for its first conference win of the year. Mexico was missing four of its six varsity players due to reasons such as sickness, injuries or prior engagements.

“Three out of the six players on the team have never played varsity before today,” Senor said. “It was a great experience for the future of our team. We had a huge doubles win with Brixton *Goerne) and Brennon (Beasley) winning 10-6, and Brixton Goerne won his first varsity match ever helping project the team to a NCMC team win.”

Mexico (2-3, 1-1 NCMC) has three road matches scheduled in as many days starting Monday at Capital City (4-3), Tuesday at Boonville (1-2) and Wednesday at district foe North Point (2-4).

Lady Bulldogs blown away in 4-0 loss to Marshall

In recent games, Mexico’s offense has been trying to overcome some shortcomings and had more to worry about Tuesday night.

On a windy evening, the Lady Bulldogs lost their eighth straight North Central Missouri Conference game spanning back to last season with a 4-0 loss to Marshall at Chris Hotop Field in Mexico.

Mexico (0-8, 0-3 NCMC) trailed 2-0 at halftime and then had to go against the wind as Marshall (3-2, 1-0 NCMC) scored in the latter half’s second and 23rd minutes while rattling off 14 shots in the second 40 minutes. Head coach Sarah Olson said the wind was a concern, especially in the second half.

“The wind did not help us as we obviously had that advantage in the first half, when we had a lot more offense,” Olson said. “The wind even picked up during the halftime chat. We prepared for it and knew it was going to happen.

“Unfortunately, we got nothing going on offense. Really, we want the ball on the ground. Offensively, when you’re playing with the wind at your back, you can play the ball here because it’s hard for the defense to read. Defensively, you want to keep the ball as close to the ground as possible. That way, it’s more predictable.”

North Callaway defeats defending EMO champ Bowling Green 8-1

North Callaway has tore through the Eastern Missouri Conference so far this season.

In three conference games, the Thunderbirds have outscored their EMO opponents 32-5 with their third conference victory happening on Monday at Bowling Green 8-1. The Bobcats are the defending conference champions after going undefeated in the EMO last year and had a three-game winning streak against North Callaway that traced back to 2018.

North Callaway (4-2, 3-0 EMO) scored in the first inning like the previous two victories, plating three runs against Bowling Green (3-5, 1-3 EMO). The Thunderbirds finished eight hits but had standout efforts on the mound from Davis Woods and Keaton Bell.

Woods went six innings in the start while allowing five hits, five walks and one run and striking out five. Bell pitched a hitless seventh inning.

Community R-6 12 Slater 2. Trojans move to 4-1 overall and 1-0 in Central Activities Conference. They're schedule to play at Van-Far (0-4) at 5 p.m. Thursday.
