North Callaway knocks off Montgomery County first time in program history
North Callaway finally did it on Thursday.
The Ladybirds not only won a set against Eastern Missouri Conference foe and perennial champion Montgomery County but won the match 3-0 at home. North Callaway took sets 29-27, 25-20 and 25-16 to give the program its first ever victory over the Lady Wildcats.
Prior to Thursday, North Callaway (2-0) had lost its previous 21 matches against Montgomery (0-2) and won its most recent set against the Lady Wildcats back in 2016 when matches were still three sets.
Head coach Andrew Klein said much of the credit for the program finally earning this victory goes to his senior class that includes Carlie Clark, Lakyn Hartley, Bailey Hill, Natalie Shryock, Avis Endres and Jaden Smithee.
"They all have spent three to four years working hard to compete in conference," Klein said. "They earned this win."
North Callaway plays its first road match at 6 p.m. Monday at Russellville (1-0).
Mexico comes back to defeat Kirksville
Mexico is 2-0 after defeating its second North Central Missouri Conference opponent at home. The Lady Bulldogs defeated Kirksville (3-1) 3-2 after losing the first two sets.
Mexico (2-0) hosts Hallsville (1-0) at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
Centralia swept by Eldon
Centralia starts the season 0-2 after being swept on Thursday at Eldon.
The Lady Panthers lost 25-10, 25-12 and 25-7, bringing the program's losing streak to Eldon (1-1) up to seven matches.
Centralia plays its home opener at 6:15 p.m. Monday against Tipton (4-1-2).

McCurdy lead Community R-6 offense to 18-8 win at Hermann
The Community R-6 offense continued to roll on Thursday night.
The Lady Trojans won 18-8 at Hermann (0-2) in six innings. Amy McCurdy went 3-for-5 with four RBI and two doubles to lead the offense.
Community (3-0) scored in every inning, including seven runs in the first two innings. Chloe Johnson was 2-for-4 with two RBI and three stolen bases, Braelyn Kuda had two RBI, and Rylee Rafferty finished 3-for-4 with four runs scored and two stolen bases.
Jocelyn Curtis pitched four innings in relief with one earned run on four hits and one walk with three strikeouts. Myla Carroll struck out five in two innings.
Community hosts Clopton (2-0) at 10 a.m. Saturday and hosts Marceline (2-1) later that day at 2 p.m.
North Callaway scores two-year high in 20-2 win at Van-Far
North Callaway won its Eastern Missouri Conference opener in a big way on Thursday.
The Ladybirds won 20-2 in five innings at Van-Far (0-3), finishing with 17 hits and seven extra-base hits. Three of those hits for extra bases cleared the fence. North Callaway's run total is the most it has scored in two years and the most since a 21-0 victory in 2022 at Wellsville-Middletown.
Kymorie Myers hit two home runs, including her second one that sailed way past the fence in dead center field, and went 3-for-4 with five RBI. Ella Slater hit one inside-the-park home run to tally the one RBI. Megan Schmidt was 3-for-4 had four RBI, and Liv Knoepflein was 3-for-4 with two RBI.
Speight allowed one earned run on eight hits and one walk in five innings pitched for North Callaway (3-2) to go with four strikeouts.
For Van-Far, Elliott Utterback was 2-for-3 with a RBI and Ashlynn Grammer had a RBI. Dalana Gay was also 2-for-3.
North Callaway plays at 10 a.m. Saturday at New Bloomfield (2-2) while Van-Far plays at 5 p.m. Tuesday at South Callaway (0-2).
Centralia's Brown stars in circle, at plate in 11-1 win vs Battle
Jaylynn Brown shined once again for Centralia.
The sophomore struck out 11 and allowed one run on four hits and two walks in six innings against Class 5 Battle (2-5) in an 11-1 six-inning victory. Brown also was 2-for-4 with four RBI, including a grand slam in a six-run third inning.
Madi Johnson hit a solo home run in the sixth inning and was 3-for-4 with two RBI. Bailey Schuering was 2-for-4 with a RBI double, and Ealynne Bostick went 4-for-4 with two runs scored.
Centralia (3-0, 1-0 CCC) hosts Clarence Cannon Conference foe Highland (3-1) at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday.
Paris loses first game of season 12-3 at Cairo
Paris sustained its first loss on Thursday night.
The Lady Coyotes lost 12-3 at Cairo (3-0), committing seven errors for all 12 runs allowed to be earned. Cairo also had four extra-base hits to go with Olivia Cross' seven strikeouts and three runs on eight hits and two walks in seven innings.
Kennedy Ashenfelter had two RBI to lead Paris, Knightlee Mitten had one RBI and Emma Ashenfelter was 3-for-4.
Before Thursday, Paris (2-1) had won its first two games of the season, defeating Mark Twain 11-4 on the road on Sept. 3 and South Shelby 10-3 at home on Sept. 4.
The Lady Coyotes tallied 16 hits against Mark Twain (3-3). Sophia Crusha led the offense by going 3-for-5 with three RBI, three runs scored and two triples; Reese Sutton was 2-for-4 with three runs scored, two RBI and a double; and Alyssa Webb was 3-for-4 with two RBI. Sutton allowed three earned runs on 11 hits and one walk to go with six strikeouts in seven innings.
Paris committed nine errors in its home opener against South Shelby (2-3) but also finished with seven hits compared to South Shelby's three hits. Kennedy Ashenfelter allowed three unearned runs, walked none and struck out 11 in seven innings. Sutton led the offense by going 2-for-4 with three RBI and a home run, Mitten had three RBI, and Emma and Kennedy Ashenfelter each had two RBI.
Paris hosts district foe Wellsville-Middletown (0-3) at 5 p.m. Monday.

Missouri Military Academy beats Moberly fourth straight time
Missouri Military Academy didn't allow its winning streak to end against Moberly.
The Colonels came back from a 2-0 halftime deficit on Thursday to win 3-2 at Moberly (2-1). Fernando Puebla scored two goals and had an assist, Alexander McBride had a goal, and Avin Hernandez had two assists.
Gihana Favour Nziza had six saves in goal.
MMA (2-0) plays at 5 p.m. Sept. 13 at Fulton (0-2).
Girls tennis
Mexico swept by Capital City
Mexico lost 9-0 to Capital City (2-0) on Thursday night.
The most contested matches for the Lady Bulldogs were Claire Hudson's 8-5 singles loss and Hudson and Lucy Gleeson's 8-5 doubles loss.
Mexico (2-6) hosts North Central Missouri Conference and district foe Hannibal (2-0) at 4 p.m. Tuesday.
