Community R-6 wins tight games in home triangular

Community R-6 has won five straight games.

They haven't been easy, however, since four have been decided by two runs or less. After defeating district foe Silex 6-5 on Friday at home, the Lady Trojans won 7-5 against South Callaway and 6-5 against district foe Paris in two games played at Community R-6.

The Lady Trojans (8-2) held South Callaway after scoring six runs in the first two innings. Amy McCurdy finished 4-for-4 with with three runs scored, two doubles and one RBI, Lydia Hoyt was 3-for-4 with two RBI, Jocelyn Curtis was 2-for-4 with one RBI and one double, and Chloe Johnson went 2-for-4 with one RBI. Myla Carroll pitched seven innings with 10 hits, three strikeouts and two walks.

Community needed to score two runs in the seventh inning to beat Paris, tied the game at 4 in the sixth inning. Johnson drew a walk in the seventh to bring home a run, and McCurdy finished 2-for-4 with one RBI. Johnson hit a two-RBI double in the sixth inning to give her three RBI, and Braelyn Kuda was 2-for-3 with a double. Curtis went 3-for-3 with one RBI and pitched seven innings with five hits, five strikeouts, four walks and two earned runs.

Curtis was in the circle on Friday when she stranded a Silex runner at third base to hang on to the tight victory. She was 2-for-3 with two RBI and a double, McCurdy was 2-for-4 with two RBI and a double, Rylee Raffery was 3-for-4 with one RBI and a double, and Peyton Schafer was 2-for-4 with one RBI and a triple.

Community (2-0 CAC) hosts Central Activities Conference foe Cairo (6-1, 0-1 CAC) at 5 p.m. Monday. 

Paris almost goes 2-0 at Community R-6

Paris was two runs away from a perfec record on Saturday.

The Lady Coyotes defeated South Callaway 10-0 and then lost 6-5 to the host Lady Trojans in a triangular played at Community R-6. 

Paris (7-2) had 10 hits against South Callaway and was led by Knightlee Mitten's 2-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBI and Alyssa Webb's 2-for-4 with three RBI. Reese Sutton struck out six in three hitless innings, and Ava Crain struck out five in four innings with one hit allowed.

The Lady Coyotes scored one run in the seventh inning against district foe Community R-6 on a Mitten RBI single but couldn't match or surpass the two runs scored by the Lady Trojans in the top half of the inning. Emma Ashenfelter had two RBI, and Sophia Crusha went 2-for-4 with two doubles. Kennedy Ashenfelter pitched five innings with four strikeouts, three hits, one earned run and one walk. 

Paris plays at Bevier (1-4) at 5 p.m. Monday.

Junior high softball

Community R-6 takes third at Holy Rosary tournament

For the second straight weekend, Community R-6 junior high finished third at a tournament.

The Lady Trojans were third at the Holy Rosary Tournament in Monroe City. They defeated Paris 13-1 and North Shelby 5-1 in the third-place game while losing 8-5 to host Holy Rosary.

Against Paris, the Lady Trojans finished with 12 hits, including home runs from Kaytlynn Arens (inside the park) and Ana McLeod (two-run inside the park). McLeod was 3-for-3 with four RBI, Arens was 2-for-3 with three RBI and Natali Sommer went 2-for-3 with three RBI. Sommer struck out six and allowed one run on seven walks and one hit in five innings pitched.

Against North Shelby, Arens and Alexis Schafer each had two RBI while Schafer struck out five and allowed on run on two hits in the circle.

Community's record is at 6-3.

Fall baseball

Community R-6 drops two in Higbee tournament

Community R-6's fall baseball record falls to under 500 again after Saturday.

The Trojans lost 10-0 to Clopton and 10-8 to Higbee in the Higbee tournament. They were no-hit against Clopton and allowed five runs in the final two innings against Higbee. Nik Crider and Lane Carter each had two RBI against Higbee.

Community plays at Higbee again at 5 p.m. Monday.
