Richard Stroheker of Mexico is a Vietnam Veteran and is doing everything he can to raise awareness for his 46-year-old daughter Debra Stroheker, who is in desperate need of a liver transplant.
"It is kind of like when she was a kid and got a cut and I put a band aid over it to make it better, I am looking for that band aid again," said Richard Stroheker.
The story recently took on a life of its own on social media after people in the Mexico community heard about it. Mr. Stroheker has recently taken a job at the Mexico McDonalds to earn extra money to pay for gas as he takes his daughter to St. Louis University and Columbia for medical evaluations and testing.
"The Facebook post went viral. People started showing up and giving money. He would rather they did not. It is amazing the way the community has responded. It gives you hope that there are a lot of good people left in this world, said Chris Williams, Mexico McDonald's General Manager.
Mr. Stroheker says he is simply trying to raise awareness and find a liver donor match for his daughter. His daughter Debra is A positive.
One of Mr. Stroheker's family members has put out a request on social media that no one comes up and give money while he is working and that everyone hang tight and once they have a chance to sit down, an announcement will be made on how you can help. Donations can be made at the First Community Bank in Mexico, MO.
In the meanwhile people can take these steps to help become a liver donor. Call your transplant center. Ask transplant professionals to help you learn about living donor transplantation. Involve your family and friends right away, and at every step of the way. Share your story by talking about your need, everywhere possible. Grow your support team using social media or other methods. How do I find out if I am a liver donor match?
The tests for a potential liver donor include:
Blood tests.
Chest X-ray.
CT scan.
Electrocardiogram (EKG)
Physical exam.
Tissue matching.
