Twenty-seven years ago on April 19, 1996, former First Lady Barbara Bush along with three thousand Mexico students, MMA cadets, and families packed the Missouri Military Academy Field House for our community’s third annual Salute To Literacy.
The event sponsored by The Mexico Ledger and four other city and state groups was designed to honor individuals and groups making significant contributions to literacy in our community.
Joining Mrs. Bush on stage that afternoon were Missouri First Lady Jean Carnahan and Deloris Malcolm, President of the International Reading Association. All three ladies read a children’s book to pre-schoolers at the Williams Family Support Center Head Start prior to the Salute at MMA.
