The Mexico Academic A-Team is on an unprecedented streak.
This past Saturday, Feb. 3, the team won it’s 62nd game in a row to win its seventh tournament of the season. The team has not lost a game since October and is ranked 16th in the country and is the top team to beat in Missouri.
“This is by far the biggest winning streak we’ve been on in my tenure,” said Academic Team Coach Dale Schenewerk.
Mexico A, as they cleared the field going 10 - 0 averaging 556 points per game on their way to their seventh tournament win of the season. This runs their record to 80 - 2. Camden Williams, like many times this season, was the tournament's top scorer, as he averaged 205 points per game through the preliminary rounds. Mexico A defeated Westran A, Quincy B, Hallsville B, Scotland County C and South Shelby in the preliminary rounds before beating Marceline A, Centralia A, Kirksville A, Rushville-Industry A and Hallsville A in the playoffs. Mexico A won by an average of 476.5 points. Members of Mexico A today were Williams, Carter Blackburn, Dylan Reid, Liam Hoyle and Lucy Gleeson.
Mexico B ended the day 6 - 4 and finished as 14th out of 36 teams. Mexico B had wins today over Hannibal B, Marceline B, Pilot Grove, Hallsville B, Fulton and Winfield B. Members of Mexico B today were Alexia Femrite, AJ Leon, Jude Yancey, Dee Harter and Zellen Duncan.
Mexico C ended the day 4 - 6 while finishing 21st out of 36 teams.
“This is an incredible finish for a team of players who are all in their first season,” Schenewerk said.
Mexico C picked up wins over North Shelby B, Schuyler County B, Scotland County A and Clark County. Members of the Mexico C Team today were Aubrey (Ash) Lee, Conner Baclesse, Hunter Feger, Robbie Lopez, Rynn Duncan and Trinity Bush.
The A-Team has a break as they prepare for a grueling WUHSAC field as they travel to Washington University on Feb. 17.
The B and C Teams will play a rescheduled MACA JV State Tournament this Saturday, Feb. 10 at Parkway West and then turn right around and head down south to Fair Grove on Monday, Feb. 12. for back to back novice tournaments.
