The Mexico Board of Education held their final meeting of 2022 on Tuesday, Dec. 20.

During the meeting a review of results of a survey on a four-day school week took place. The survey was posted online and below are some of the responses.

When asked, Are you in favor of a four-day school week? Of the 651 responses, 63.1% said yes, while 36.9% said no.

When asked, What is your greatest concern with a possible four-day week? The responses were childcare on Monday, meals on Monday, and effect on academic performance.

When asked, What do you see as positive outcomes with a possible four-day school week? Responses were teacher retention, teacher recruitment, more time to spend with family, and more time for students to rest.

Sarah Keithley, president of the Community Teachers Association spoke to the board and said most of the teachers and support staff are very passionate about going to a four-day school week.

"This is a big deal. Whatever decision is made, a group of people will be happy, and a group of people will be disappointed," said Mexico Board of Education President Keith Louder.

It was ultimately decided the Mexico Board of Education will hold a special session on a day during the week of Jan. 9, 2023 to have a discussion of a four-day week vs. a five-day week. A vote will then take place during the regularly scheduled Mexico Board of Education meeting on Jan. 17, 2023.
