Mexico boys defeat Class 5 McCluer North 71-44 in lopsided shootout game

The Mexico boys took down another bigger school on Saturday.

The Bulldogs played in the Mid-MO Missouri Basketball Invitational presented by Ramey Basketball at Harrisburg and defeated Class 5 McCluer North 71-44 in their first ever meeting. It was the fifth victory over a school Class 5 or higher for Class 4 No. 8 Mexico — as determined by the most recent state poll — and the Bulldogs’ eighth straight victory following a 75-50 win at Moberly (9-11, 2-4 NCMC) on Friday that put them 6-0 in the North Central Missouri Conference and 5-0 in the district.

Mexico (19-2) finished with 17 assists and 38 points in the paint against McCluer North (10-7) which were the areas that most impressed head coach Darren Pappas.

“Another impressive defensive effort by our guys,” Pappas said. “We did a great job of protecting the paint and holding McCluer North to one shot and out.”

Pappas also was impressed by senior point guard and game MVP DJ Long, as he had 21 points, eight assists, six rebounds and three steals before it was all said and done. Jaydon Eldridge led Mexico with 24 points and four 3-pointers, and PJ Perkins had 10 points and four offensive rebounds.

Mexico girls beat Marshall's physicality 45-39

The Mexico girls bounced back after bouncing off their opponent on Monday night.

The Lady Bulldogs lost 77-46 at state-ranked North Central Missouri Conference foe and Moberly on Friday but came back with a 45-39 victory at conference foe Marshall (2-17, 1-5 NCMC) on Monday.

“This was a very physical game from start to finish,” head coach Makenzie Mudd said. “The score was back-and-forth a lot, and it really made us have to be selective and execute down the stretch.”

Claire Hudson led Mexico (10-11, 3-4 NCMC) with 19 points and six rebounds, and Grace Hudson followed with 10 points.

Lady Bulldogs lose conference game at state-ranked Moberly

The Mexico girls had a tough battle going into Friday, and that is exactly what they got.

The Lady Bulldogs lost 77-46 at North Central Missouri Conference foe and Class 4 No. 8 Moberly 77-46.

“The score doesn’t reflect how hard and well our team worked in the game,” head coach Makenzie Mudd said. “Moberly is a strong, well-rounded team and I think we did a great job competing until the very end.”

Claire Hudson led the Lady Bulldogs with 22 points and seven rebounds, Grace Hudson followed with 16 points and five rebounds, and Jo Thurman had seven assists and five rebounds.
