Mexico is no stranger to celebrating Juneteenth. As a matter of fact, they have been doing so for several years thanks to people like Coach “Charlie” Fry and Anthony Herndon. The events would bring in people from all around to see the vendors, activities and learn the history of the occasion.
Now that Juneteenth is a federal holiday, Anointed Life Saving Ministries (ALSM) is keeping the tradition going. This year's festivities will start on Saturday June 17, at Tyronn Lue Park. This year, there is no charge for vendor spots and they are still accepting vendors. It is also an awesome way for organizations and nonprofits to host both to bring awareness about what they do and/or to sponsor a carnival style game for youth to enjoy! There will be free Kona ice from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
At 2 p.m. the first Little Mister & Miss Juneteenth will be crowned at the community center. Contestants are between the ages of 0-5.
This will be followed by sack races, three-legged races and other games. Find a friend or two and join the fun.
Anthony Hearndon, will be hosting a basketball skills contest starting at 4 p.m. There will be prizes for winners and all youth are invited to participate.
The committee is hoping that the presence of Mo-Axe will get more people to come out.! The vendor will be at the celebration from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. and attendees will have the opportunity to participate for free. There will be a contest for those 18 and older starting at 5 p.m.
The Juneteenth celebration will conclude on Monday, June 19, at 6 p.m. at St. Luke UMC located at 604 Johnson St., with a service that will share the history of the holiday. There will be a community choir that will perform; if you are interested in singing with the group, please come out at 4 p.m. that day for a musical workshop to learn the song.
If you would like more information about the Juneteenth Celebration, or would like to assist, please contact, ALSM Board Member, Vivian Gould at 573-581-8772.
