The Mexico’s girls standout players stepped up on Thursday for a good close to a tournament.
The Lady Bulldogs won both games they played this week in the Warrenton tournament, after having to forgo the first one due to weather, and wrapped up the tournament with a 67-56 victory over Class 5 Hazelwood East in the fifth-place game. Grace Hudson and Jo Thurman combined for 40 points and nine 3-pointers to lift Mexico.
Head coach Makenzie Mudd said there were some concerns about Hazelwood East, but an all-around effort from Mexico (7-9) turned into a fun game.
“Hazelwood East has a very strong post player and guard that scored a lot and challenged us,” Mudd said. “I was very proud of our mental toughness to hold on and finish the game.”
Hudson had a team-high 23 points and five 3-pointers for Mexico, and Thurman followed with 17 points and four 3-pointers. Karlee Sefrit added 12 points.
Mexico plays at district foe Hallsville (4-6) at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.
