Mexico’s Parks and Recreation Department called an unusual January board meeting after failing to reach a quorum at their scheduled Dec. 7 session.
The decision was made because time is running out on some final details related to the fairgrounds pool project, particularly a recommendation for the fee structure. The department’s board typically takes January off, but director Chad Shoemaker felt the matter could not wait for February.
The pool, which is undergoing a $3.5 million transformation, is expected to reopen on Memorial Day weekend. The construction project is currently on schedule, with the pool’s shell complete and foundations for two buildings have been poured and set.
Plans for renovating the pool began in 2007 and work started this year. The project upgrades what was an eight-lane lap pool with a separate wading area to a zero entry facility with a shaded area and high tech features. Funding for the project comes in part from a $2.5 million load, to be repaid through use tax collections.
The winter meeting is set for Jan. 4 at 4 p.m. in Mexico’s City Hall.
