Mexico softball fall short 7-2 at undefeated Hallsville
Mexico didn’t have the offense to match Hallsville’s fifth inning.
The Lady Indians moved to 7-0 after a four-run fifth inning to beat Mexico 7-2. The Lady Bulldogs lost their third of the four games they played in Boone County over the last three days.
Hallsville had a fly ball turn into an error then a sacrifice fly before it strung hits together to take a 6-2 lead. Keerstan Ewing finished with a line of two earned runs out of a total four allowed in 4⅔ innings.
Mexico had five hits compared to Hallsville’s nine hits. Maddy Feger was 2-for-4 with a double, and Landri Teel and Payton Shaw each had a RBI.
The Lady Bulldogs (3-8, 0-1 NCMC) hosts North Central Missouri Conference and district foe Hannibal (1-4, 0-1 NCMC) at 5 p.m. Thursday.
Lady Bulldogs lose two of three at Battle
Mexico started the day with a victory but ended with two tough losses.
The Lady Bulldogs began the Battle Round Robin tournament on Saturday with a 2-1 win over Marion C. Early and then lost 7-6 in six innings against Father Tolton and 8-3 against host Battle in Columbia.
Mexico won a pitcher’s duel against two-time reigning Class 1 third-place Marion C. Early (1-7) in a game with a combined six hits. Aleigha Henderson struck out seven and allowed one unearned run on two hits and one walk in seven innings, and Maddy Feger and Alyssa Miller each had a RBI.
The Lady Bulldogs lost 1-0 earlier this season to reigning 25-win Father Tolton (6-3) and couldn’t put away Tolton this time despite taking a 6-3 lead into the bottom of the sixth inning. Hannah Loyd was 2-for-4 with two RBI, a triple and a double, and Feger, Claire Valenzuela and Kenley Jones each had a RBI.
Mexico only mustered four hits against Class 5 Battle (5-5) with Loyd, Payton Shaw and Scottie Smith finishing with a RBI each. Smith was 2-for-3 with a double, and Loyd had a home run.
