Mexico Public Safety press release on body found believed to be Brandon Spears

Posted

On Sunday, March 19, 2023 at around 3:45 PM, Mexico Public Safety officers were called to the 1700 block of Fairground Road in reference to a human body being found by the caller.

According to Mexico Public Safety Major Brice Mesko, the homeowner that found the body had not been in the shed since before December. Officers were directed to a white male, lying dead in an unlocked shed at the back of some property. The man has been preliminarily identified as 43-year-old Brandon Spears of Mexico based off clothing, tattoos, and general build.

Spears had active warrants out for his arrest as a result of the investigation into the fires and murder that happened during the early morning hours of December 23, 2022. During that investigation, a home security camera showed a person believed to be Spears about five blocks from Fairground Road, less than an hour after a second fire. According to Mexico Public Safety it appeared the person on the video was attempting to get into parked cars or looking for shelter. The weather on December 22, and 23, was dangerously cold.

Spears had been charged with first degree murder and arson for the December death of his mother 60-year-old Ruth Stuart, in connection to a deadly apartment fire in Mexico. Spears had been paroled from prison about a week before the deadly fire. The Missouri Department of Corrections confirmed that Spears had served eight stints in prison.

Audrain County Coroner Todd Yager is arranging for an autopsy by the Boone County Medical Examiner sometime this week.

Mexico Public Safety reports there no visible traumatic injuries to the body and no apparent link between Spears and the owners of the shed. Mexico Public Safety Major Brice Mesko says the results of the autopsy will take some time, however his department will release initial findings when they become available.
