Mexico Public Safety provides tips to keep packages safe this holiday season

Posted

With the holiday season in full swing, Mexico Public Safety is advising area residents to be aware of porch pirates.

A porch pirate is defined as someone that steals newly delivered packages from other people's porches, hence the name. The phrase porch pirate dates back to the early 2010s.

According to foxnews.com, 210 million packages were stolen from Americans in 2021.

Major Brice Mesko with Mexico Public Safety, said the best thing to do usually is to track deliveries. "The less amount of time deliveries are on your porch the safer it will be. Once you find out it is delivered get it in or have a neighbor pick it up for you."

Major Mesko also provided some safety tips when it comes to shopping in store. "Avoid carrying large amounts of cash, use debit or credit. As you come out of stores be aware of your surroundings. If you don't feel safe call Mexico Public Safety. Our officers will be around shopping areas. It is also good idea to lock your car and don't leave valuables in your car in plain view."

Mexico Public Safety is also warning residents of scams. The Department says be careful with suspicious emails, and phone calls.
