An existing business in Mexico has a new name and a new owner with the opening of Strawberry Ann’s Boutique.
The store formerly known as EK Sassy at 731 East Liberty Street, is now Strawberry Ann’s Boutique with new owner Meagan Talley. Talley with the help of the Mexico Area Chamber of Commerce cut the ribbon on the store Tuesday, June 27. The store will be open Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays with the store closed on Sundays and Mondays.
Talley told the Ledger this is her first business venture and she will keep her full-time job working at a local insurance agency. Talley’s grandmother, Lois Freels, will help run the store during the day while she will be there in the evenings and on Saturdays. Talley’s daughter, Harper, is the store’s official model and the inspiration for the venture.
“My daughter is always into boutique outfits, crazy outfits, so I was like, ‘Might as well open something up for Mexico,’” Talley said.
Talley was a customer of the store and friends with the previous owner. Talley said she knew the owner wanted to step aside from the business so they began a discussion. Talley said it was a lot to learn at first.
“A lot of time management, organization, and planning what I was going to do each day,” Talley said.
With no real experience to go off of Talley reached back to her school days and pulled out some lessons from the past.
“I felt like I was back in high school where we had to do our plan,” Talley said. “Just started from scratch but it wasn’t too bad to get through it all.”
Talley isn’t going on the venture alone. She has consulted with the former owner quite a bit and her mother, Chrystal Freels, has some experience running a fireworks stand each summer and has consulted with her on the aspects of running a business.
“That’s a three to four-week process and this is going to be a little bit longer than that, hopefully,” Talley said.
The boutique will feature women’s clothes of all sizes including plus sizes. Strawberry Ann’s has both boys’ and girls’ clothing along with shoes and accessories. Another thing it has is men’s clothing which can be hard to find in a boutique.
“Normally there isn’t a lot of men’s stuff in a boutique,” Talley said.
