Mexico shut down by state-caliber Boonville, Eugene

Mexico had a rough April Fools Day.

The Bulldogs played in a triangular Saturday in Boonville against two state-caliber opponents — Class 4 No. 9 Boonville and Class 2 Eugene, who received votes in the latest poll — in cold, windy weather. They were shut out in both contests, accumulating nine combined hits in a 7-0 loss to Boonville and a 2-0 defeat to Eugene to bring the losing streak to four games.

Boonville (4-2) gave its starter Evan Bishop some early support while taking advantage of some early Mexico mistakes against Jack Wilburn. Two hit by pitches and a two-out error scored the first Pirate run in the first inning and then another extended the inning to two more Boonville runs in the second inning.

Wilburn finished with five unearned runs off five hits and three walks in four innings as the Bulldogs (3-4) committed five errors.

Freshman Brady Fox made his varsity debut by covering the final two innings while allowing two more unearned runs on two hits and striking out one.

Matt McCurdy was the lone Bulldog with two hits while Sam Ryan, Ty Sims, Tyler Thoenen and Andrew Ruge each picked up one hit. Ryan drew Mexico’s only walk.

Bishop struck out seven and allowed four hits and one walk in five innings.

There was a similar pattern in the Eugene loss as Garrett Hogard pitched all seven innings while striking out five and allowing three hits and three walks.

Ryan started his first game of the season for Mexico, turning in a solid five innings with five strikeouts, five hits, four walks and one earned run. The Bulldogs allowed another unearned run in the fifth inning following one of two errors in the game. Colby Renn hit a home run for the Eagles (2-1) in the second inning.

Landyn Kleinsorge and Drew DeMint had the two Mexico hits. Kleinsorge pitched a shutout inning, and sophomore Tyson Carr tossed another in his first varsity action of the season after 12 shutout innings with 19 strikeouts in junior varsity.

Mexico plays Highland (Illinois) today at Busch Stadium after the Cardinals’ 12:15 p.m. game against the Atlanta Braves.
