Lady Bulldogs defeat Fulton first time, finish second at NCMC tournament

The Mexico girls were good competition on Tuesday.

The Lady Bulldogs finished second behind Marshall at the North Central Missouri Conference Tournament at Moberly Area Community College with a 4-1 record. Mexico won 33-31 over Highway 54 rival Fulton for the first victory over the Lady Hornets in program history, defeated Hannibal 45-24, Kirksville 54-21 and Moberly 48-24, and lost to Marshall 48-27.

Head coach Tony Senor said Abbie Seibert, Abby Bowen and Karisa Hayden were effective no matter what weight class they wrestled at. Seibert finished 4-1, with victories at 170 against Marshall’s Mareli Andrade-Gonzales via a 9-8 decision and Hannibal’s Addison Friday via a 10-8 sudden victory; Bowen was 4-1, with a 44-second pinfall victory at 130 pounds over Marshall’s Keeley Robinson; and Hayden was 4-1, with victories at 190 pounds over Fulton’s Layne Simerl via a 7-2 decision and Marshall’s Olivia Martin via first-period pinfall.

Alexus Johns went 5-0, with a pinfall victory over Marshall’s Sherlyn Solano, and Alizabeth Welch was 5-0 at 105 pounds, with a pinfall over Marshall’s Kendra Bellamy.

Senor said all-conference wrestlers won’t be released until after the state tournament but expects Mexico to have two first-team honors and three second-team members.
