After finishing seventh at the Class 1 state tennis tournament a year ago, Brendan McKeown is going back.
The Mexico senior qualified for the Class 1 state tournament at Cooper Tennis Complex in Springfield on Friday and Saturday, with Class 1 first-round singles starting at 1 p.m. Friday. McKeown won his sectionals match on Saturday at the Fairgrounds Park Netplex in Mexico 2-1.
McKeown dropped the first set 7-5 against St. Charles’ Connor Russell but won the next two sets 6-2 and 10-5. The victory is the 75th in McKeown’s career.
“Russell was very good at lobs and slicing the ball,” head coach Tony Senor said. “After some adjustments after the first set, Brendan took control of the match. We made it to the third-set tiebreaker and all I could think about was how many times Brendan had been in that situation.”
