Dante Billups can carry a load. As a running back for Mexico High School he often gained extra yards while dragging defenders along.
But Billups can also go the extra distance academically, so he should be a double threat at Westminster College. On Thursday the Bulldogs senior signed a national letter of intent to play football at the Fulton school, where he also plans to major in sports science.
“It’s going to be totally different – the pace, the preparation,” Billups said. “And the classes will be harder.”
Billups seemed to get better each year of high school football. Mexico head coach Steve Haag said this season’s game against Marshall epitomized the standout back’s career.
“We fell behind in the fourth quarter and Dante did a great job – not just carrying the ball, but selling fakes and allowing others to gain yards,” Haag recalled. “If he continues to be physical and run hard it should serve him well in the future.”
Billups says he was attracted to the Westminster campus and the academic challenges the school offers. He had been accepted by the University of Missouri as an option if he chose not to play on the next level.
But, he added, “Westminster’s football team is good.”
