The Knights of Columbus Hall in Mexico was packed full of people for the 2023 Missouri Farm Bureau legislative dinner on Thursday, Jan. 19.

Guests were served a dinner of smoked pork chops, green beans and a baked potato that was topped off with ice cream for dessert.

A host of Audrain County elected officials then spoke to the crowd.

"There is just one election in Audrain County in 2023. It takes place in April. We have some new voting equipment that will be more efficient and will help with cyber security," said Audrain County Clerk Lisa Smith.

The closing of the hospital in Mexico was addressed by Audrain County Presiding Commissioner Alan Winders.

"People have not paid county taxes on a hospital for about 10 years. A hospital is not something that the Audrain County Commission is going to create. I believe we need an ER and there is talk about a group of people moving forward with creating a micro-hospital. I just want to make sure we are not creating false hope in the community, however there are people working on this," said Winders.

Other speakers included Missouri State Representative Kent Haden. Audrain County Associate Commissioners Tracey R. Graham, and Leslie Meyer. Audrain County Recorder Teresa Allen, Audrain County Collector Elect Amy LeCount, Audrain  County Prosecuting Attorney Jacob Shellabarger.

More speakers on hand were Missouri Farm Bureau President Clarissa Cauthorn and a representative from U.S. Congressman Sam Graves office.
