The Mexico Middle School Courtesy Award was the idea of two retiring teachers, Terry Henage and Janice Douglas, both of whom retired from MMS in 2003. Henage and Douglas both recognized the importance of good character and behavior for an optimum learning atmosphere.
They believed that public recognition of students demonstrating courtesy and respect would help foster this atmosphere.
The award was then established to honor one boy and one girl who have consistently demonstrated personal qualities of kindness, respect and courtesy to their classmates, teachers and school staff at MMS, to be recognized each year.
Recipients this year are Skylar Shaw and Samantha Smith; both recipients are elected by the MMS faculty and staff. Each recipient is awarded a certificate of recognition along with a check for $50. Additionally, the two will be recognized at the spring awards assembly and their names will be engraved on the MMS Courtesy Award plaque, which is displayed in the awards showcase at MMS.
Samantha’s parents are Jason and Theresa Smith; Skylar’s parents and Mark and Shawna Shaw.
