The North Callaway Thunderbirds wrapped up their pre-district 2020-21 campaign with four of the best minutes they played all season. Those were the sentiments of their head coach, Matt Miller, who watched his team defeat Wright City 59-49 Thursday night. His compliment references the fact the T-Birds were tied 46-46 with four minutes to play before locking down and closing out strong.
“We finished really well on both ends,” Miller said. “It was a good way to end the regular season.”
Callaway led 14-11 after the first quarter and 26-24 at the half and extended to a 41-33 lead after three quarters.
The win comes after a disappointing loss to the Eastern Missouri Conference champion Montgomery County Wildcats last week, and gave apparent momentum as Callaway entered district play.
Sophomore Matthew Weber had 19 points to lead the T-Birds, followed by senior Cody Cash, who had 18. Cash also added 8 rebounds, 9 steals and 7 assists. Freshman Sam Pezold had 13 points, all of which came in the second half. Noah Scrogum added 4 points and 12 rebounds.
With the win, Callaway closes out the regular season with a 12-12 overall record and 6-3 in the EMO.
