The sister connection was strong for North Callaway softball on Saturday morning.
Not only did Megan Schmidt strike out nine in seven innings while pitching to older sister and catcher Abigail Schmidt, but Megan also scored the winning run on a single by Abigail in the sixth inning to win 6-5 at New Bloomfield (2-3). The Ladybirds (4-2) defeated the program that eliminated them in the district semifinals last season.
Megan Schmidt used her 115 pitches to scatter seven hits, five earned runs, two hit by pitches and one walk. She was 2-for-4 with a RBI and a run scored. That run followed a leadoff double in the sixth inning thatwas turned into a run by Abigail Schmidt's lone hit of the game.
Lia Bondurant was 2-for-4 with a double and run scored, and Madyson Gordon finished 2-for-3 with a double, run scored and a bunt single.
The Ladybirds scored three runs in the first inning but managed to score just enough for victory despite hitting about a handful of balls hard toward the outfield. Instead of potentially being home runs, they were knocked down by the wind short of the fence.
North Callaway has back-to-back home games on Monday and Tuesday, starting with a 5 p.m. contest against Russellville (0-1) and then a 5 p.m. Eastern Missouri Conference showdown against Wright City (1-4) on Tuesday.
