Monday’s Class 2 District 3 championship game in Harrisburg was tied at 1 in the seventh inning.
No runs had been scored via a hit until Fayette’s Greycen Syfard hit a two-RBI home run off all-state pitcher Megan Schmidt to hand North Callaway a 3-1 loss. Schmidt struck out 13 and allowed three hits in 6⅔ innings and also had the Ladybirds’ only hit.
Schmidt led off the fourth inning with a leadoff triple against Brylee Eubanks, who went in with an ERA around 1.50, and scored on a Sophie Olsson groundout for North Callaway (17-9) to tie the game at 1. Fayette (18-8) had scored via a suicide squeeze in the second inning.
Eubanks struck out seven and walked two in seven innings for Fayette, who won its first district title since 2019. North Callaway played in its first district title game since 2018.
