Ladybirds ‘spectacular’ in 63-42 win at district foe South Callaway
The North Callaway girls were “spectacular” in the eyes of their head coach on Tuesday.
The Ladybirds won 63-42 at Callaway County rival and district foe South Callaway, spreading the scoring amongst three in double figures and displaying “unselfish” passing.
Riley Blevins led North Callaway (8-4) with 17 points and three 3-pointers, and Abrielle Burgher and Lakyn Hartley each followed with 11 points, with Burgher hitting three 3-pointers and Hartley recording nine rebounds, four steals and four assists. Natalie Shryock added two 3-pointers and seven assists, and Kymorie Myers had five points and seven rebounds — four on the offensive glass.
Reagan Arrowood led South Callaway (3-8) with 27 points and five 3-pointers, but North Callaway took a 21-10 advantage after the first quarter that the Lady Bulldogs couldn’t decrease.
North Callaway opens the South Callaway tournament at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the high school gym against South Callaway.
Thunderbirds lose 73-65 at South Callaway after lopsided fourth quarter
The first 24 minutes were great for the North Callaway boys and then the fourth quarter happened.
The Thunderbirds lost 73-65 at their Callaway County and district foe South Callaway after being outscored 26-5 in the fourth quarter. Adam Loucks led South Callaway (6-4) with 25 points and 10 rebounds and blocked five shots in the fourth quarter while Tayber Gray scored 11 of his points in the fourth quarter.
Head coach Matt Miller said ball handling made the biggest difference as South Callaway’s pressure defense affected North Callaway (3-7) and forced eight turnovers in the final eight minutes. The Thunderbirds had less than 10 turnovers going into the fourth quarter.
Sam Pezold led North Callaway with 20 points and four 3-pointers, Paul Russell followed with 14 points and four 3-pointers, Isiah Craighead had 13 points and seven rebounds, Austin Brown had 10 points and two 3-pointers, and Levi Drake finished with six assists.
North Callaway hosted New Bloomfield (4-8) at 7:30 p.m. tonight before opening the South Callaway tournament at 4:30 p.m. Monday in the middle school gym against Eldon (7-3).
