Mexico native and current head coach of the NBA’s Los Angeles Clippers, Tyronn Lue, was feeling as much love from the community as he has given to it this past holiday weekend.
The first ever Ty Lue Appreciation Parade started at the Mexico High School and made its way around the Mexico Square where it finished up. That began the day on Saturday, July 1, that ended with a fireworks display courtesy of Coach Lue.
The parade featured several dance performances, the customary fire trucks with sirens and plenty of kids with bags to fill up with candy. Many of the floats featured pictures and themes of Coach Lue’s stops in the NBA as a player and coach. Lue played 11 seasons in the association and won two championships with the Lakers. Lue as head coach led the Cleveland Cavaliers to their first championship in 2016.
In between all of that on Saturday was a huge block party at Tyronn Lue Park (formerly Garfield Park) that included a basketball tournament along with games for kids, vendors and other activities. After the fireworks an after party was held at the 4-H Center.
The weekend got started on Friday night where the block party started which included a community kickball tournament. There was also an after party at the 4-H Center on Friday night.
The weekend ended at the city’s municipal pool with a Sunday pool party from noon until 5 p.m. that was free thanks to Coach Lue that included snacks and drinks.
The celebration is planned to become an annual event. Lue also announced he would be donating $10 million to the city of Mexico with more details coming later.
