Paris calls in reinforcements, shuts out Southwest 56-0

Paris values every player in its 8-man football program.

Several Coyotes scored their first varsity touchdowns on Friday in their 56-0 victory at home over Southwest (Livingston County) with Hale, Tina Avalon (0-7). Paris (5-2) earned its second shutout of the season, building a commanding 46-0 lead at halftime.

Scottie McGee threw two touchdown passes after Luke Ensor’s two throws off the game went for touchdowns, Zeke Turner caught a touchdown pass from Ensor and then McGee, Aiden Loper caught the other McGee touchdown pass, and Parker Conover ran for a touchdown. Turner led the defense with seven tackles and two tackles for loss. Head coach Cody Carney said one of his assistants Keeyon Howard doesn’t call the reserves for Paris backups.

“We try to get as many JV games as we can in, but it’s a different feel on Friday night,” Carney said. “Keeyon Howard calls our young guys, our backups, reinforcements. I love it because they are. You’re not just a backup. It’s good having those guys get some time out there because you never know when an injury is around the corner.”

Top offensive weapon Gatlin Fountain only had one carry and it went for a 49-yard touchdown. To round out the primary unit, Brady Shivers caught a touchdown from Ensor, Sawyer Clements ran for a 41-yard touchdown and Payden Crain returned a punt for a 45-yard touchdown.

Carney said Paris doesn’t try to get “too cute,” or too complicated, with the offense and the reinforcements can slot in when they are needed.

“We try to find reps for those guys during the week,” Carney said. “In practice, we try to get those guys some plays. Early on in the season, we try to get them out there and running plays early to get it to sink in.”

Carney said it was also good to mix in the inexperienced players in with the more experienced ones so Paris can see more possible situations. Overall, the Coyotes are in a better spot than they were during Week 1 last season when they lost 38-18 to Southwest.

“Southwest is in a tough spot right now,” Carney said. “They’ve had a lot of injuries, and they are playing a lot of young kids right now. I think they played five freshmen. Our guys went out and executed early.”

Paris defeated Slater (4-3) last year 56-12 but will have to avoid a role reversal like it benefitted some this past week because Slater is better this season. The Coyotes play at Slater at 7 p.m. Friday.

“They’re much improved from last year,” Carney said. “They’ve got a lot of speed and athleticism. Hopefully, we can get a good week of preparation for them. It will definitely be a tough test.”
