The Mexico High School class of 2026 has officially closed that chapter of their lives — but not before an evening well-spent with their closest friends.
On May 12, ahead of what would turn out to be a full week of pre-graduation celebrations and recognitions, seniors took a moment to reflect at Hawthorne Heights during the annual Senior Sunset.
Amy Fisher, a mother of three high school Bulldogs, spearheaded the event, which only just began last year and she saw quite the turnout. There were 115 Bulldogs who signed up to attend the festivities and there were more than enough prizes to go around.
“We raised almost $3,000 in cash,” Fisher said. “We used that to buy physical prizes and gift cards, so they’ll take home a lot tonight.”
Fisher’s first son, Charlie, would be receiving his diploma just days later on the same field — but that hadn’t sunk in quite yet.
“The last couple weeks of school, it’s so busy and chaotic, you almost don’t have time to be emotional, but I think later this week, it’s really going to hit all of us moms,” she said.
Meanwhile, Ava Herron, senior class president, was reminiscing as she prepares to attend the University of Missouri in the fall.
“I’m going to miss the community that I'm surrounded by — all my friends that I've grown up with and that I've known my whole life,” she said while sitting with her friends at Hawthorne Heights.
The evening, kept upbeat by DJ John Knipfel, started off with a barbeque, courtesy of Amy Groves and Tom Crum while yard games were in full swing. But the main attraction was the relay race. Seniors were feeling a little extra silly as they quickly donned hilarious costumes and took off down the field, ending the night in true Bulldog fashion — with a little spirited competition.
