R-6 Lady Trojans beat rival, Cairo

The Community R-6 Lady Trojans improved to 18-2 Monday night with a 49-36 win over a talented Cairo squad. Community is a perfect 6-0 in the CAC Conference and is now ranked seventh in the state among Class 2 teams.

Cairo entered the game as 10th in the state and entered the game undefeated in conference play.

The Lady Trojans took a 25-15 lead into the half and closed out the game with a 14-10 fourth quarter.

Needless to say, it was a big win for the R-6 squad.

“Winning this game puts us in the driver's seat,” said Lady Trojans coach Bob Curtis. “If we win out the rest of the way to claim our fifth straight conference title.”

There’s a lot of history between Community and Cairo.

“Cairo is one of our biggest rivals in the CAC,” Curtis said. “Every year there's so much excitement and energy around this game.”

Community has moved up a class and is now in the same district as Sturgeon so this game held a lot of weight on who might grab the top seed.

“We had terrific offensive balance tonight with Olivia, Alexis, and Sarah really filling it up,” said Curtis after the game.

Community leaders were Olivia Kuda, 13 points, 6 rebounds; Alexis Welch, 13 points, 8 rebounds; Sarah Angel, 12 points, 3 steals; and Shelby Clark 6 points, 2 steals. Paige Meyer and Brynna Beamer had 2 points each.

Curtis pointed to Paige Meyer’s play on defense; Meyer blocked a couple shots and effected a lot of Cairo shots at the rim.

“Alexis (Welch) did a phenomenal job denying their dynamic freshman post Harman touches close to the basket as she stands 6'1,” Curtis said. “Shelby (Clark) and Sarah (Angel) were very good at breaking the press and playing stingy defense on the Brumley sisters.”

Beamer and Kayla Jett showed patience against the press and took care of the ball under pressure

“I could not be more pleased with our execution Monday night,” Curtis said.
