R-6 teacher finds crowdfunding success

Community R-6 instructor Melanie Utterback received funding for equipment to aid offsite learning through DonorsChoose, with Sonic matching 50 percent of donations made on Teacher Appreciation Day.

When the pandemic toppled classroom routine, Utterback improvised a system with three devices that would allow her to accommodate both classroom and online learning. The setup proved workable, but unwieldy.

“Oftentimes I have to stop the progression of class time to use my MacBook to work on CANVAS or take care of other classroom business,” she reported. “It is a lot, but it is necessary to keep everyone connected with the lesson and actively engaged.”

Utterback set up a DonorsChoose page seeking a second iPad with a tripod and audio accessories that would reduce background noise, naming the campaign “Can You Hear Me Now?”

She reached her goal of $827, with $276 coming from Sonic. The company donated a total of $1.5 to over 7,000 teachers through Sonic’s Limeades for Learning program.

Utterback plans to dedicate the iPad toward the Zoom classroom, in order to keep a site open throughout the day.

“This will help give all students an additional access point where they are unable to be in seat,” she explained.
