Mexico's City Council approved a small increase to sewer rates. The revision will raise the monthly fee by approximately $1.30, based on usage of 5,000 gallons.
The increase is necessary to cover annual debt service payments, capital projects and the costs of daily operation and maintenance of the wastewater plant, according to deputy city manager Roger haynes.
Haynes reported that fiscal year 2021 will end with $626,000 in capital expenses. The city budgeted $777,000 for fiscal year 2022 for purchases and improvements.
In both cases, there is no financing required. The city adopted a pay as you go program using budgeted cash reserves.
The debt service payments result from projects in 2010 and 2011. Voters approved bond issues to pay for those improvements.
Last year the city took advantage of low interest rates and refunded the bonds to reduce the payout term.
The new sewer rates hold the monthly base rate at $9.09. The use rate per 1,000 gallons goes up slightly.
In addition, users of the sewer flow outside the city limits will be billed at 150 percent of established rates.
