Six Mexico seniors appear on all-NCMC football team

The season didn’t end the way Mexico wanted in the district semifinals against Boonville, but six seniors were honored on their way out.

After a 4-6 season in 2022, Andrew Runge, Anthony Shivers and Kendyr Taylor were all-North Central Missouri Conference players at multiple positions, and Morgan Grubb, Matt McCurdy and Owen Paden each earned a selection. Mexico had nine selections total, with six appearing on the first team.

Runge was a first-team linebacker and punter and a second-team running back. He finished with 44 tackles, six tackles for loss and a team-high three interceptions and two sacks on defense, he averaged 35.2 yards on 20 punts while sending five inside the 20-yard line and one for 60 yards, and ran for 631 yards and seven touchdowns on 92 carries.

Shivers was named as a first-team running back and second-team defensive back, rushing for a team-high 833 yards and 10 touchdowns while averaging 8.5 yards per carry — one of four along with Runge, Grubb and freshman Drew DeMint to average at least five yards per carry. On defense, Shivers finished with 39 tackles and one interception.

Taylor was a reigning all-state player on the offensive line (with Runge and Grubb being all-state linebackers last year as well) and was named to the first team on both the offensive and defensive lines. Paden was also recognized as a second-team offensive lineman. Taylor led the offense while they ran for 216.6 yards per game. On defense, Taylor had 41 tackles, six tackles for loss and a sack.

Grubb was a key blocker and runner on offense but remained as a difference maker on defense as a first-team defensive all-purpose player. He led the team with 114 tackles while having two tackles for loss and two interceptions.

On defense, McCurdy could be found in the backfield a lot, boasting a team-high 12 tackles for loss and two sacks. His second-team linebacker selection also included 72 tackles for the second-most total on the team.
