Mexico boys crash boards, build early lead in 56-41 win at Centralia

The Mexico boys took an early lead and didn’t waver much after that on Friday.

The Class 4 No. 9 Bulldogs led at Centralia 15-5 after the first quarter and eventually won 56-41 after outrebounding the Panthers 38-22 — 15-8 on offensive boards.

Mexico (14-2) finished with a 45 percent shooting percentage compared to Centralia’s 37 percent from the field while having three score in double figures. DJ Long led with 16 points, six defensive rebounds and six assists, PJ Perkins had 10 points and 19 rebounds (nine offensive), and Donye Nunnelly finished with 10 points and four offensive rebounds.

Centralia (6-6) was led by its own double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds from Cullen Bennett and also had nine points each from Logan Rosenfelder and Anthony Ford, who had seven rebounds.

Mexico hosts Class 5 Warrenton at 7:30 p.m. Friday, and Centralia (0-1 CCC) hosts Clarence Cannon Conference foe and Class 3 No. 7 Palmyra (12-1) at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

Mexico girls’ shots don’t fall vs deep Centralia in 58-18 loss

Down Highway 22 awaited a tough opponent for the Mexico girls on Friday night.

The Lady Bulldogs lost 58-18 at Centralia, who received votes in the latest Class 3 poll and has been ranked this season. Claire Hudson finished with 14 of Mexico’s points.

Head coach Makenzie Mudd said Centralia (9-3) was always going to be a challenge because of its depth, and Mexico (5-9) didn’t help itself with the missed shots early.

“We struggled to get shots to fall in the first half and that really hurt throughout the rest of the game,” Mudd said. “We had moments of great team ball movement against their pressure but just weren’t able to turn it into points.”

Braylin Brunkhorst led Centralia with 16 points, Raegan Anderson had eight points and Shelby Lewis finished with seven points.

Mexico competes this week in a tournament in Warrenton while Centralia (1-0 CCC) hosts Clarence Cannon Conference foe and Class 3 No. 6 Palmyra (9-2).
