At the conference championships, Seth Stevenson was seconds away from a 1600 title.
The Mexico freshman lost to a Hannibal runner that day but didn’t allow history to repeat itself Saturday at the Class 4 District 4 meet at Capital City High School in Jefferson City. Stevenson won the boys 3200 championship with a time of 10:35.74 to beat North Central Missouri Conference champion Rhett Hayes, of Hannibal, by 0.18 seconds.
Stevenson was 0.79 seconds away from winning a conference title in the 1600 but lost to Hannibal’s Jaxon Jones that day. This time, Stevenson emptied his tank in the last 100 meters to hold off Hayes.
Stevenson is Mexico’s only district champion heading into Saturday’s Class 4 Sectional 2 meet at Orchard Farm High School in St. Charles. The Bulldogs qualified in three other events while the Lady Bulldogs had two girls advance to sectionals.
Charlie Fisher qualified in the boys 100 and 200 with respective times of a fourth-place 11.27 and a third-place 22.62. Tyler Stone took fourth in the javelin with a throw of 47 meters.
