A survey by the Mexico Parks and Recreation Department recently released doesn’t answer any more questions about a dog park in Mexico.

“The dog park questions did not give us any tremendous clarity other than there’s a percentage of people that want it,” Mexico Parks and Recreation Director Chad Shoemaker told Park Board Members last week.

Not getting closer to an answer doesn’t mean the city didn’t collect a lot of data on the issue. The main question isn’t about whether or not a dog park would be useful but rather where would it be located. Shoemaker said several years ago they had a plan in place to move forward but it was shot down at a city council meeting and one neighborhood has already said loudly they don’t want it near them. Shoemaker said they got several write-in answers about the dog park.

“Which usually is an indication that somebody feels strongly about something to actually write down a block instead of checking a box,” Shoemaker said. “Again, those answers are all over the place.”

Shoemaker said one new piece of data is the idea is gaining popularity. He said in past surveys when residents have been asked about where money should be spent the option of a dog park’s numbers keep going up each time the city asks.

“This is an issue that’s going to have to be dealt with whether we can find a neighborhood or not,” Shoemaker said.

Shoemaker said the project will take priority once the city settles on a plan for the Tyronn Lue Park entrance issue.
