Team sweep for Mexico girls

Matching the boys, the girls went 3-0 as a team in Friday’s quad with Kirksville, Brookfield and Palmyra at The Sports Complex.

Individually, Katie Bowen took two matches at 102, Kaylynn Pehle claimed a win in the Palmyra round at 132 and in the 122 class, Abby Drew topped her opponent against Kirksville.

Bowen was first on the mat and wrapped things up quickly against Palmyra’s Emma Watkins. After a few moments testing moves, she shot forward and dropped Watkins with 12 seconds on the clock in the first period.

“I gave it my best,” Bowen said, pointing out that after she gained the advantage, her opponent “didn’t have much fight.”

Pehle needed a reversal of fortunes in her match against Palmyra’s Kylie Begley. It came when she worked her out of a hold midway through the opening six minutes. Pehle then flipped over to cover Begley, but time ran out.

It was 5-2 in the Bulldogs’ favor after one, and Pehle had a comfortable lead in the second – one that she didn’t need. With a scant six seconds on the clock she earned a pin.

Afterward, Pehle noted that it came down to a question and answer.

“’Is she strong enough to hold me down?’” she said. “It was a lot of strength.”

Abby Drew dropped her contest to Dyoni Mundi. Choice Foster, Brett Iman and Ivy Perez did not face opposition, but aided the team’s 30-18 victory.

Brookfield was next, and on the mat the Bulldogs in blue bested the Bulldogs in red. Drew lost to Brookfield’s Jenna Keller after dominating the first two periods.

A slick move a minute into the first led to a near pin. The referee went into a count several times, but Keller managed to raise a shoulder or keep her head up. Still, Drew was on her way to a win, up 9-1 in points.

But she ran into trouble in the third and that was it.

“I made a couple of mistakes,” Drew explained. “It was frustrating – I almost had that.”

Iman also lost in the 159 match, pinned by Oscarina Jackson. Only Bowen put Mexico in the win column, taking Jenna Keller to the mat at the 2:56 mark.

Forfeit points taken by Pehle, Foster and Perez proved the difference on the team side.

Kirksville didn’t bring much of a girls roster to Mexico. Pehle lost to Lydia Nelson by fall at 1:26 in the 127 class. But Drew put on a show in the 122 match.

She was on top 4-1 after the first, but got into disadvantage early in the second. The Tigers Lauryn Nelson got Drew on the mat and was seeking a pin when Drew wriggled and rolled, ending up with a pin of her own.

“I did a cowcatcher,” she said – essentially hooking the arms under and swinging the legs over with the goal of landing weight on the opponent’s head. “It was open.”

Forfeits gave the Bulldogs a 30-6 team score.
