Thunderbirds avenge Bowling Green tourney loss

Posted
Monday’s game against Bowling Green had a similar vibe to the last time North Callaway faced the Bobcats. Callaway got out to an early lead and Bowling Green rallied late.

There was one glaring difference this time around though: The Thunderbirds won.

After jumping out to a 10-2 first-quarter lead and entering the half up 25-12, the T-Birds were controlling the game tempo. There was more of the same in the third quarter, but in the fourth, Bowling Green caught fire, posting 23 points to close out the game.

While Bowling Green outscored their host 23-13 in the final session, Callaway responded to the pressure and held off the surge for the 52-48 win.

For Callaway coach Matt Miller, the game indeed had a similar feel to the Bowling Green Tournament.

“Our boys did enough to hold on to the lead this time,” he said, calling the game “a good conference win.”

Callaway freshman Sam Pezold led all scorers with 26 points, including three 3-pointers. Senior Cody Cash had 14 points, 7 steals, 7 assists and 8 rebounds; senior Noah Scrogum had 8 rebounds and sophomore Matthew Weber added 11 points to the cause.

Charlie Bowen had 15 points to lead Bowling Green; Michael Starks had 9.

Callaway vs. Montgomery County

Callaway didn’t fare as well on the road again Montgomery County Tuesday, managing only six first-half points in a 54-26 loss. Montgomery claimed the Eastern Missouri (EMO) Conference title for the second straight year with a 10-0 conference record and 18-7 overall. Cash led the Thunderbirds with 10 points.
