Mexico boys come up short 64-47 vs Lindbergh’s length

The Mexico boys had quite the challenge Thursday night.

In the Bulldogs’ final game in the Lindbergh Invitational Boys Tournament, they lost 64-47 to Class 6 Lindbergh in the third-place game.

Head coach Darren Pappas said Lindbergh’s length was challenging for Mexico (10-5) to deal with as the Bulldogs fell behind 29-16 at halftime after trailing 10-9 after eight minutes.

The Flyers (6-4) finished with 21 assists to go with 35 rebounds — compared to Mexico’s 21 — and outscored the Bulldogs in the paint 36-20.

DJ Long made the all-tournament team after averaging 21 points and three assists in the three games. Long scored 21 points to lead Mexico along with five rebounds. Anthony Shivers followed with seven points and two steals, PJ Perkins had six points, and Donye Nunnelly finished with five rebounds.

Mexico (3-1 NCMC) looks to avenge a North Central Missouri Conference loss and make a move in the conference standings at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Kirksville (9-4, 3-1 NCMC).

Bulldogs go for third place after Westminster Christian comes back

The Mexico boys won the first quarter Tuesday but couldn’t hold back Westminster Christian Academy.

The Bulldogs lost 67-53 in the semifinals of the Lindbergh Invitational Boys Tournament after leading 12-9 after one quarter. Westminster Christian (9-5) shot ahead 25-18 at halftime to win and send Mexico (10-4) to the third-place game at 6:50 p.m. Thursday against Class 6 Lindbergh (5-4).

A lot of those shots were taken at the free throw line as Westminster Christian finished 20-for-22 compared to Mexico’s 3-for-12. The Bulldogs were also beaten on defensive rebounding 26-18.

DJ Long led Mexico with 23 points, three assists and two 3-pointers, Jordan Shelton followed with nine points and three steals, and PJ Perkins had six points and three steals.

The Bulldogs lost 64-47 to Lindbergh on Thursday night, taking fourth place. Long was named to the all-tournament team.
