An electric offensive second quarter for the Van-Far football team put the Clopton IndianHawks away early Friday night.

The Indians (1-4) jumped out to a big lead and recorded their first win of the season.

“We finally started to click,” Van-Far head coach John Kliewer said.

Van-Far started fast defensively with Bryson Lay returning an interception for a touchdown, but the IndianHawks (2-4) scored the next two touchdowns, taking a 13-8 lead early in the second.

At that point, Van-Far quarterback Tony Garland began his takeover, answering back with a 41-yard strike to LaTrell Wright. It would be Garland’s first of four second-quarter touchdowns.

Garland passed for two more scores — another to Wright and one to Lay — along with a short rushing touchdown.

The game wouldn’t feature much more scoring, as neither team scored in the third and both scored once in the fourth, including another Garland touchdown run.

Garland dominated Clopton in his winning performance, completing seven passes for 124 yards and three touchdowns, along with adding two short rushing touchdowns. Garland hit a season-high in both passing yards and touchdowns on Friday.

“He found his groove,” Kliewer said.

Lay had a big game as well in addition to his interception return and 32-yard scoring reception. He rushed 14 times for 106 yards and recorded two interceptions.

“I'm going to give him the ball every chance I get,” Kliewer said.

Wright caught four passes for 92 yards and a score.

Van-Far’s defense suffocated Clopton, forcing seven turnovers – five interceptions and two fumbles — despite linebacker Garrett Schmidt missing the second half and defensive tackle Easton McAfee spraining his ankle.

Van-Far held Clopton to only one third down conversion and one fourth down conversion.

“We did a really good job of shutting them down in those big moments,” Kliewer said.

This week, Van-Far will look to build on this win against Montgomery County (5-2). The home game will kick off at 7 p.m.
