The Lady Indians then had a tough game by losing 61-15 to reigning district champion Moberly, going more than 15 minutes at one point without a field goal. Van-Far looks to bounce back at 9 p.m. today against Eastern Missouri Conference foe North Callaway in the consolation bracket.
Head coach Heather Minter said there wasn’t much to say after the loss other than Moberly (3-0) being a “very talented team.” Most of Moberly's district championship team was back, including Asa Fanning and Grace Billington. Fanning led the floor with 23 points, including 20 of those in the first half, and had two 3-pointers while Billington had nine points to match the amount scored by new face Mia Faught.
Van-Far (1-3) did play the Lady Spartans close through most of the first quarter. Elliott Utterback, who finished with five points and four rebounds, hit a jumper in the lane to make it 12-7 Moberly. The Lady Indians wouldn’t convert another field goal until the two-minute mark in the third quarter when McKenna Engh-Hoffman, who led the team with eight points and six rebounds, took an interior pass from Carmen Wilburn.
Mylee Keller had three steals, but Moberly made a habit of coming away with steals as it finished with 15 of them — 11 when it was 42-9 at halftime.
Eight players scored for Moberly while four Lady Indians had at least one point.
