Vandalia gears up for sesquicentennial

Vandalia will celebrate its sesquicentennial Saturday, Aug. 10 at Tri-County Park with its Charter Day Celebration.

The day will feature a jam-packed agenda of fun including a Little Mr. and Miss Contest, cake decorating contest, photo contest, beard contest, photo booth, family games, POET corn trailer, homemade ice cream and cupcake social, swimming pool party, food trucks and live music by Seth Wade.

The welcome ceremony and opening of Vandalia’s 1974 time capsule will be at 6 p.m.

The beard contest will include the following categories: full, chin beard/goatee, chin strap, mutton chops and shadow; the mustache contest, handle bar, pencil line, Magnum P.I., and Hulk Hogan/horseshoe. Pre-registration can be done now until time of contest. Contact Harold Williams at the Vandalia Barber Shop for more information. Prizes will be awarded.

Two categories, color and black and white, will be in the photo contest. Subcategories will be buildings, events, people, school and nature. Photos are to be turned in June 2-July 28 at Vandalia City Hall or at the Audrain County Historical Society. For more information,  contact wreagan467@gmail.com, Prizes will be awarded.

The cake decorating contest is sponsored by the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR, with chairman Leslie Fowler. For more information, contact Fowler at 217-257-6868. Prizes will be awarded.
