Tickets will soon go on sale for the fall and winter productions at the Press Arts Center with “War of the Worlds” showing Oct. 6-8 and “The Little Mermaid” with two weekends of showing Dec. 1-3 and again Dec. 8-10.
Tickets for War of the Worlds go on sale Monday, Sept. 18 and tickets for the Little Mermaid go on sale Friday, Oct. 20.
Lennette Brown, director for the musical production, talked about the popularity of “The Little Mermaid” and the interest they received from local actors when it came time for auditions.
“We had like 12 people audition for Ursula,” Brown said. “We had several girls who wanted to be Ariel. Some actors will come in and say I’ll take any part. Some actors will come in and say, ‘I want this part.’”
Presser Arts Center produces its shows and depends on local volunteers to put on the shows that also include kids. Eight sea creature parts in the musical will be played by elementary school-aged kids. Brown said it takes a lot of effort to be a part of a production.
“We’re trying to go around schedules,” Brown said. “We’re trying to go around kids who have homework. It’s a big commitment to be part of a show.”
It’s not just acting. A lot of stuff also goes on behind the curtain and many of the actors help out on that end when they’re not on stage.
“A lot of times with it being community theater the actors will help move stuff too,” Brown said.
Brown said there will be volunteers in the show from all over the area. There will be actors from Columbia, and Centralia, and the production’s Choreographer is from Moberly. Some of the actors have performed in several shows before while the experience will be new for some. And some actors have been away for a while and are making a return. The production is something the volunteers put a lot of effort into.
“You meet a lot of people and by the end of it, you’re family,” Brown said. “We don’t always get along but we make it through a show.”
Brown directed last year’s winter production of “Sister Act” and will be the director for next year’s winter production of “My Fair Lady.” Brown said “The Grinch” is also on the shortlist.
