The Thunderbird Wrestling Club boasted a record setting season. They had 15 kids qualify for state.
The boys had seven wrestlers advance to medal rounds and set a new club record for placement with Gunnar Wenneker taking second place.
The boys team as a whole placed 31 out of 140 teams. Gunnar was followed by Cole Strickland and Collin Moore with third place, Jaiden Galbreath fourth place, Scott Winingear fifth place, and Bryson Twillman and Carver Safranski in sixth.
Our girls team set the bar high with Ella Baker winning by pin in 31 seconds in the championship match and Elka Heuer secured first place in a nail-biting triple overtime bout. Bre Buenemann also found her spot on the podium, taking fifth place in her 10u rookie season. The girls team placed 21 out of 113 teams.
“What a great bunch of kids,” club president Tim Safranski said. “We had two weeks after the regional qualifying tournament to prepare our 15 qualifiers for the state tournament. These 15 kids showed up to practice with a focus that made our coaches and parents proud. Then, in Kansas City, we saw their preparation pay off with great wrestling by all qualifiers, and our tournament ending with 10 medalists. I am looking forward to seeing these kids wrestle again next season, in youth for some and NCHS for the rest.”
